How To Develop Mindfulness


This weekend, I took a a few days off to spend some time on Nusa Lembongan, a very small island in the South East of Bali. I haven’t been using internet as much as I used to over there. Yes I know, I would have been crazy (or stupid) to do so. There are so many great things to explore and try here, that it would be sad to spend my days on my computer, right?

This time off from internet, emails and social media allowed me to realise that in our modern societies, our minds are constantly occupied with heaps of external things. Things we have to do, things we didn’t do or all the stories we see about others on social media. We are on our phone when using public transports, walking in the street or sitting at a café. And we are on our computer most of the rest of the time.

If you don’t have any kind of spiritual practice or if you don’t make room for daily ‘me-time’, it leaves you very little time to think about the most important thing on earth: yourself.

Thanks to Tim Ferriss, I’ve already been practicing a low information diet for a while. I never had any telly since I left my parents at 16, I am not reading newspapers or magazines and I am not listening to radio either. A few years ago, people thought I was crazy. But internet’s definitely been my weakness. I’ve always been working online and as grew older, my internet consumption increased. I am relying on the computer for (too) many things: work, information, communications and even entertainment. So these last days were kind of a change for me!

By not being constantly connected, I was able to focus on what really matters: me, my wellbeing, my relationships with others and the world.

I was able to enjoy nature and my surroundings even more. This was an incredible time and this allowed me to realise how much our modern lives have taken us away from ourselves.

And the most impressive is that I didn’t miss it. I was actually surprised about that!

I have everything that really matters and by being able to focus on myself and things that are truly important to me, I am able to slow down, relax, reach a deeper peace of mind and be more present.

I recently read that we have on average about 70,000 thoughts per day. That’s huge but what if we could choose which thoughts were worth thinking?

And nope, it’s not a joke, you can actually do it!

By developing self-awareness and mindfulness, you can choose to focus on what really matters to you. You can choose to focus on what makes you happy, on what makes you feel good. And suddenly, you’ve changed your whole perception on life and everything becomes easier.

One tip for that: unplug & take time. Take time for yourself. Take time to reflect on your life and on what truly matters for you.
