Vitamin to heal depression, really?
I love Andrew Saul’s work and according to him depression would be linked to nutrients deficiencies.
I actually don’t have any issue to relate to that. During many years I struggled with eating disorders and I was obviously malnourished. I suffered with different health issues caused by a lack of nutrients and minerals such as anaemia, amenorrhea, hair loss, etc. And I was always depressed. It was so common for me that I thought it was my normal state.
Sadly, I sometimes thought happiness was accessible only in childhood and that it was not something possible for adults. Luckily things have changed and I am not believing these things anymore.
A few months after starting recovery I easily noticed that my mood and feelings were much better than ever before. It was obvious that it was linked to the fact that I was re-nurturing my body and gave it everything it needed to work. This was a great sensation. While I started to reach food freedom, I realised that happiness was fully accessible to all.
Andrew Saul tells us that niacin (also known as Vitamin B3) greatly helps to improve depression. Apparently, 250 to 500 mg of niacin per day will make your depression go away. But be aware that this will also cause a sunburn feeling and red flashes on the skin for people who are not highly lacking of this vitamin, so be careful.
However, it seems that very sick people (schizophrenia, dementia,…) would need higher doses of niacin to get better. According to Andrew Saul, PhD, these people might actually be dependent on certain nutrients and won’t be affected by any red flashes at all as they would need more of this vitamin to feel and be ‘normal’.
In 2010, a report published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed a decreased risk for depression with greater intake of B6 and 12, from both food and supplements.
Don’t be afraid to take a multi-vitamin supplement. I take one every day and I know it helps me to stay well nourished and give my body what it needs to perform at its best.
Vitamin B12, mostly found in animal products, is also very important for our nervous system and can’t be created by the human body. Vegans and vegetarians have to take a supplement to meet their needs as this vitamin is pretty rare in a plant-based diet. But age, stress and medications are reducing the absorption of vitamin B12, so I would recommend everyone to be careful bout their B12 intake. Vegetable sources of B12 include kelp, brewers yeast and fermented foods such as tempeh, miso and sauerkraut. A supplement can be a great option if you are a vegetarian or vegan and are not eating these kinds of food regularly.
Other vitamins that help to improve your mood and have the best day ever include:
- Vit C helps you make chemicals which improve your mood.
- Triptophan found in dairy and nuts in general (cashews especially) improves mood levels as well.
- Vit B6 is important for the breakdown of fats, carbs and proteins. It supports red blood cells, nerves, skin and hormone production.
You can find these vitamins in fresh foods. Be aware that processed, canned or frozen foods are usually lacking the essential vitamins and nutrients you need.
So eat a fresh, whole food diet for a great mood, feelings & happiness!
If you want to give yourself a boost, a B-complex supplement can be a great idea.
