Why Traditional Eating Disorder Treatments Don't Work

Discover why traditional treatments don't work, what kind of shifts need to happen and what works instead...

Do you know why traditional eating disorder treatments don’t work?

When it comes to eating issues such as disordered eating patterns (chronic dieting, binge eating, bulimia, etc…), we still have a long way to go in terms of treatment in the modern medicine world.

However, we now know for sure that these current recovery methods are not the right answer as over 90% of patients relapse after traditional treatment, which is incredibly high!

The problem with traditional therapies is that they don’t look at the bigger picture. They consider eating disorders as mental illnesses, nothing else, and treat them with psychotherapy and serious drugs like anti-depressants.

Traditional treatments look for answers in your childhood instead of focusing on your whole life on all levels: physical, mental, spiritual, social, professional, nutritional and biological.

The thing is that traditional methods don’t try to understand how the whole system (YOU) is working.

For sure, we can definitely find interesting things by investigating our childhood and past traumas, but this is not enough to erase an addiction, like distorted eating patterns.

It would be the exact same as treating a drug addict with psychotherapy and anti-depressants. That might help on some level but that won’t cure the problem completely…

But there is hope! Even if the number of people suffering from eating disorders is increasing every year, I also have the feeling that we know more and more what’s truly happening with addictions and eating issues.

We all know that to erase addictive patterns, we need to address the issue on all levels simultaneously: physical, emotional, mental, nutritional, etc.

As a holistic health practitioner, I know that we can not fully understand an issue without taking all parts of the system into consideration.

Our body is working as a complete system. This means that the whole is more than the addition of the parts and this one simple change in our mindset can actually impact the entire system / body.

This is why it’s important to look at all levels of the whole being to really understand what’s going on with eating disorders.

In my opinion, holistic health and holistic recovery are definitely the best approaches for disordered eating patterns so far.

Eating disorders are not mental illnesses, they are a combination of food addictions, conditioning, negative body image, emotional coping mechanisms, and physical malnutrition (what’s happening in your gut).

As long as all these parts are not taken into consideration simultaneously, it would be impossible to heal from an eating issue.

You might heal the physical part but if you don’t work on your body image, the emotional and nutritional parts at the same time, you will slip back to your destructive behaviours quickly.

This is why traditional therapies are not getting better results in the treatment of these problems. They don’t look at the whole picture and only take care of a very small part of the whole issue.

I’ve designed my Make Peace With Food online program accordingly, so you can work on putting all the levels together without overwhelm and then combining them as you need to.

Here is a quick overview of the program’s structure. You can click here to get al the juicy details about the different sections and see exactly what’s inside.
